Types of Condoms

It's easy to be confused when it comes to condoms, there are so many varieties out there...

Here's a mini guide telling you what you need to know...

Material

Condoms are usually made from either latex or polyurethane. Both are effective at providing protection against pregnancy and STIs, including HIV.
You can also get condoms that are made from lamb skin membrane – we personally find the idea of these pretty gross – and what’s worse is that they only offer protection against pregnancy – when it comes to protecting against STIs and HIV they offer ZERO protection. Basically, don't use 'em!

Size

Condoms come in all shapes and sizes. Usually when a condom packet says 'large' or 'small' – it is referring to the width, not the length.

It’s important that you get a size that fits you well. Regular sized condoms – which are sold in most places - will be a good fit for most penises – but if you’re particularly big, a condom that is too small is more likely to break, and similarly, if you’re quite small, using a condom that’s too big may mean that it comes off - so you guys have to be a bit more picky!

Lubricated

Most condoms are lubricated with either a silicon-based or water-based lubricant. Some use a spermicide. A spermicide helps reduce the risk of pregnancy, however, be aware that the most common spermicide is something called nonoxynol-9 – this is a chemical that some people are allergic to – and it can cause irritation – and when this occurs you will be more vulnerable to HIV infection.

Also note that spermicide lubricated condoms should not be used for anal sex.

Ribbed

Ribbed condoms are exactly the same as a regular condom but with one little difference - they have little ridges which are intended to enhance sensation.

Coloured

Coloured condoms are regular condoms – the only difference is they are coloured. Un-couloured latex is naturally a creamy white colour.

Flavoured

These condoms are particularly handly for oral sex as latex can taste pretty yucky. You can get condoms in a whole bunch of flavours, from strawberry, to chocolate.. even curry – ew! If you’re going to use these condoms for full sex, be sure to check that have the official safety stamp of your country on them.
