June 2008 Award Winners
This years partnership between MTV and The Body Shop brought us the fantastic Move Your Lips campaign, and thanks to its massive success, we have 20 new Staying Alive Award winners spanning 18 countries who will use their new funding to change communities and save lives. Once again The Staying Alive Foundation has encountered an incredible group of young people who are battling to keep friends, families and communities safe from the devastation caused by HIV/AIDS.
AZERBAIJAN : 'NUR' Children and Youth Public Union

Name: Sevinj Masiyeva
NGO: 'NUR' Children and Youth Public Union
Location: AZERBAIJAN
Nur’s project will focus on orphans and street children and consists of 3 phases: conduct 8 peer education sessions for 190 people, organise a youth conference with selected peer educators and organise an event around World AIDS Day in the capital, Baku.
BURMA: The Help

Name: Kyaw Thu

Location: Burma
Their project will focus on young MSM (men having sex with men). They plan to train 18 MSM leaders, each of whom will be expected to train other people in their own districts, organise advocacy meetings with local authorities, distribute 10,000 condoms, conduct 6 workshops in small towns and counsel and support HIV positive.
CROATIA: Y-Peer

Location: Croatia
Y-Peer’s project will target youth living in dorms around Croatia. They are planning to translate the Staying Alive produced feature film 'Transit' and air it as part of AIDS awareness workshops in 50 dorms. They will also send a copy of Transit to high school and NGOs all over Croatia.
COLUMBIA: Fundación VIA3

Name: Aydali Teresa and Rodríguez Lombana

Location: Colombia
The idea of Fundación VIA3 is to form a network of parents, teachers, and youth in 8 schools in the Martires area which has been designated as the Sexual Trade Zone of Bogota. They are planning to organise workshops on sexual health, HIV prevention, and human rights through a game called “What happened to Elisa?”. They will also produce a small film that will also be used in their activities.
ETHIOPIA: Integrated Service for AIDS Prevention and Support Organisation (ISAPSO)

Location: Ethiopia
The project targets in and out of school young people, focussing on condom use. It consists of 3 parts. Firstly they will organise 18 condom pin art workshops at youth centres for 90 people. Secondly they will train young people in film making and have them create forty 30" films on condom use which will be used in all other activities. Finally they will hold bi-weekly 'Wastena' condom distribution trainings for 10-25 young people each time (520 in total).
GRENADA: Democratic Youth Organisation

This project will target young people in rural areas. They want to organise “Training of Trainers” for 100 young people who will each be expected to run activities in their communities. They will have a second workshop for peer leaders focusing on using creativity in their activities. Finally they will develop educational materials for schools.
GUATEMALA: Jóvenes Voluntarios por los DDHH y la Prevención del VIH

Location: Guatemala
This project will focus on the Indigenous youth and sexual diverse population in Guatemala City. The idea is to create a group of 40 youth peer educator network from the capital to educate these marginal communities, through a series of 15 talks, a drawing contest, a march, 5 puppet shows (this is in fact a very popular way to communicate with Indigenous cultures in Guatemala), an education camp and printed material.
INDONESIA: 25 Messengers

Location: Indonesia
Their project targets 'high risk youth (drug addicts, sex workers and youth customers). They will train 20 peer educators who will be expected to conduct out- reach activities every month during 1 year and they will organise a capacity building workshop for the peer educators in the middle of the project to strengthen their skills and learn from their experience.
KENYA: Kisumu Self Help Disability Group

Location: Kisumu, Kenya
KSHDG will build on their current project targeting disabled youth. They will organise 4 Community dialogue forums, conduct peer education outreaches, organize three VCT promotion forums, organise peer education training for 30 disabled youths and facilitate monthly video shows. They will also aim to have joint activities with non-disabled youth.
KENYA: REPACTED (Rapid Effective Participatory Action in Community Theatre Education and Development)

Name: Collins Dennis Oduor and Dennis Kimambo

Location: Kenya
They will build on their current project and focus in particular on youth in prisons and sex workers through the use of their 'magnet theatre' approach. They will train 75 'change agents' (peer educators), organise 3 youth symposiums, organise 11 community theatre outreaches with mobile testing units, create and distribute a monthly magazine, establish a support group, a community theatre group and organise monthly life skill demonstration forums as well as a World AIDS Day event.
MALAWI: Tipindule Community Youth Organization

This project targets street youth, market vendors and bicycle taxi drivers. The project will train 30 peer educators on drug and substance abuse and HIV prevention, establish 3 youth friendly “corners” for counselling, testing and condom distribution, train 20 of the project’s volunteers in drug and substance abuse and HIV counselling and distribute 4000 condoms to young people.
PAKISTAN: Aware Girls

Their project targets young women in high schools and colleges. They will raise awareness on HIV in 10 schools and 5 colleges through the use of videos, lectures, discussions and printed material. They will select 5 students and 2 teachers from each school/college and give them a 2 day training to enable them to establish Anti-AIDS clubs in their respective schools and colleges. They also plan to make a documentary about their project
PHILIPPINES: BALUTI: “Batang Laging Umiiwas sa Tiyak na Impeksyon” (Protect the Child from Infection)

Their project targets young people aged 10 to 19. Their plans are to conduct a survey on current sexual health practices in schools and the community; to train 30 school-based peer educators; to train 40 community-based peer educators; to increase awareness on among 2,000 adolescents in school and 240 adolescents in the community; to increase referral of ARSH-related cases to the health facility; to improve safer sexual practices and behaviours among 100 adolescents
RUSSIA: Youth Theater ''Light''

This project targets young people through theatre. Their aim is to erect four new theatres in smaller towns and train at least 20 new actors and give them the necessary knowledge about HIV prevention. They want to produce posters and brochures to inform people about our theatre AIDS. They will produce a new piece that will show in Samara.
SOUTH AFRICA: Snapshot Community Cinema

Building up from this year, the project continues to target township high schools. They want to produce a documentary that will challenge men on gender issues and their behaviour. They will work with 4 high schools and identify 10 learners from each school who will volunteer themselves to participate in this program. They will produce a learning DVD material for Youth clinic (peer educators & health workers) to be able to approach the challenge more proactively and all participants to the making of this documentary will be trained to co-facilitate and open debates about the issue at hand.
SOUTH AFRICA: Murhandziwa Trading and Projects

The project targets in and out of school young people. They will train 12 peer educators, educate 200 per month, distribute 10000 condoms, conduct 8 debates and monthly dialogues with youth in churches; Conduct 9 school debates on gender and HIV prevention and will create a user friendly environment for young people at the clinics through cross referrals between the clinic and the community.
TANZANIA: Elizabeth Youth Group

The project targets high-risk youth such as sex workers and drug users. They will organise “Training of Trainers’ for 100 young people, hold 2 workshops, 3 screenings of the documentary on Elizabeth (who used to be a sex worker and is living with HIV), organise 2 drama presentations, 1 concert and 1 music show and an event on World AIDS Day.
UGANDA: YEI (Youth Empowering Initiative)

Building up from last year's project they will target out of school youth and focus on training vulnerable youth with skills. They want to equip 500 youths with vocational skills and basic HIV prevention skills; train 5 peer educators, organise 2 mobile VCT outings twice a month for 10 months, and organise weekly radio shows for 10 months.
Venezuela: Sociedad Wils Wilde

They are planning to develop a website on HIV and sexuality aimed at young people living in Venezuela. It will be interactive and include space for discussion forums and trainings as well as a daily radio show.
VIETNAM: Muon Sac Mau Club

The project targets marginalized youth and in particular MSM(men having sex with men). They will train 30 young people to be peer educators; 15 young people will do outreach work aimed at MSM, organise “edutainment activities” at schools, organise counselling in centers and one-to-one; visit and support families who live with people living with HIV, organise workshops to highlight stigma and the rights of MSM among the authorities, map out an MSM network and create educational materials.
